Dentures
............................................................................................................................................................................
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and adjacent tissues.

A denture improves chewing ability and provides support for facial muscles. Dentures will greatly enhance the facial appearance and smile. And thanks to recent innovations in modern technology, dentures now look more natural and are more comfortable than ever before.

Types of Dentures

Complete dentures replace all the teeth. A partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and also serves to prevent other teeth from changing position.
The Denture Process takes about one month and five appointments.

• The initial diagnosis is made.
• An impression and wax bite are made to determine dimensions and proper position.
• A ‘try-in’ is placed to assure proper color, shape and fit.
• The final denture is placed and any adjustments are made.

Using a combination of science and artistry the dentists at The Dental Health Center can literally redesign you smile.

After Care

Some bleeding may occur. Placing a piece of moist gauze over the empty tooth socket and biting down firmly for 45 minutes can control this.

An important aspect of the healing process is encouraging a blood clot to form at the extraction site. You must be careful not to dislodge the clot.

Avoid rinsing or spitting for 24 hours after the extraction. Also avoid hot liquids, hard or sticky foods, smoking and the use of a drinking straw. Be sure to chew food away from the extraction site.

Swelling is a normal part of the healing process. Wrapped ice packs can be applied to your face in a process of on for 10 minutes and off for 20 minutes. Repeat this cycle as you feel necessary for up to 24 hours.

If you experience pain, a non-prescription pain relief medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen is recommended.

Denture Care
............................................................................................................................................................................
The most effective way to keep your dentures clean is a combination of daily brushing and then soaking in a chemical solution. Brushing should be done with the dentures removed from the mouth, using facial soap or liquid detergent on a SOFT toothbrush. Never sleep with your dentures. Dentures should be removed before bedtime and soaked in a cleaning solution. Keeping your dentures in at night allows for bad bacteria to accumulate, which may cause infections and terrible odor.

Denture wearers should also brush the top surface of their tongue as well as the palate with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste, on a daily basis.

To keep the denture secure in your mouth, Fixodent or other denture adhesive can be used.

Adjustments
You may experience some sore spots after receiving your dentures.

Professional Care

Note: It’s a common misconception that after losing all your teeth, it is no longer necessary to visit the dentist. NOT TRUE. Because the bone supporting your dentures changes constantly throughout life, it is necessary to see your dentist periodically to evaluate its fit.
